A beautiful set of 4 vintage hand painted dessert or bread plates made in Nippon (Japan). These fine porcelain small plates are lovely to use for a wedding, bridal shower, afternoon high tea, decorate a shabby chic home, or simply to entertain your guests!
The white porcelain plates are painted with a band of off-white cream color around the rim. There is a motif of real gold (18kt or 22kt gold) leaves painted encircling the plate. There are also three hand painted pink flowers equally spaced around the plate edge as well. The center of the plate is white, allowing the painted edge of the plate to frame any item placed on the plate. The plates are also trimmed with gold.
The bottom of the dish is marked "hand painted Nippon" to indicate this piece was completely handpainted in Japan. A short history ... Nippon marks were used between 1891 to 1921 to comply with McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. The law stated that items made in Japan must be marked with "Nippon". From 1921 onward, the mark "Nippon" was forbidden since the new law required the marks to be in English. The mark is most likely associated with Noritake.
These plates are perfect for the spring and outdoor dining. The floral motif brings to mind a blooming garden. These plates are great as gifts for the entertainer in your life as well.
